Nature Strips

Contributed by Anahita Surya and current to March 2022

What is a nature strip?

A nature strip is the strip of land between your property and the road. It contains essential services such as sewerage, water pipes, telephone, power and gas. The nature strip is public land, and therefore is not part of your property.

Who is responsible for maintenance?

The occupier of the property adjoining the nature strip is responsible for maintenance and upkeep. If you live in unit title property, your owners corporation will be responsible for maintenance. Street trees are maintained by the ACT Government. You may landscape your nature strip. However approval is generally required.
