Building and Renovations

Contributed by Anahita Surya and current to March 2022

Home owners who want to build or renovate their property have to comply with the ACT Building Code. The building code contains provisions that regulate the impact of constructions on neighbours. Most notably, all new constructions should be consistent with the desired character of the neighbourhood and should not interfere unreasonably with the neighbours’ privacy. Home owners should also ensure that neighbours have adequate solar access. Approvals for development can require you to consult with your neighbour. For more info, refer to the Buid, Buy or Renovate - Codes and Standards.
